Halitosis or bad breath is caused by an excessive accumulation of bacteria in the oral cavity. If dental hygiene is insufficient, these bacteria accumulate in the gaps between the teeth, along the gums or behind the tongue, producing volatile sulfur compounds (CSV). These compounds are responsible for the bad smell.
To prevent bad breath, you should thoroughly clean and brush your teeth and use a mouthwash after every meal. If this is not possible, you can consume specific halitosis chewing gum or spray solutions.
Using tongue cleaners is a good solution to eliminate bacteria deposited on the tongue.
Alcohol and tobacco are two factors that enhance halitosis.
People suffering from xerostomia (dry mouth) are often prone to bad breath due to lack of saliva in the oral cavity.
